Crofting is a land tenure system of small scale food producers unique to the Scottish Highlands and Islands. It provides tenants with security provided they pay their rent, live on or near their croft and work the land.
Designed to protect the indigenous people from exploitation by landlords in the 19th Century, it has a proven track record of maintaining population and economic activity in remote rural areas. Crofting supports local food production while protecting the cultural heritage and the natural environment in the north and west of Scotland. It has proved instrumental in preserving the Gaelic language. Through its mix of arable and common grazing land, it encourages both communal working and individual entrepreneurship.
By buying Scottish Crofting Produce or holidaying on a croft, you are not only getting a high quality product but also supporting a traditional and sustainable way of life which has continuing relevance for the 21st Century.
The site is affiliated with the Scottish Crofting Federation, the SCF is the only member-led organisation dedicated to promoting crofting and it is the largest association of small scale food producers in the UK. Its mission is to safeguard and promote the rights, livelihoods and culture of crofters and their communities.
